Singular

Our pet snail escaped the aquarium again.
Second time this month.
The snail’s name Zippy.
Perhaps Zippy is trying to tell us something.

Maybe it’s that I should clean the tank more often.
Or maybe it’s something else.

Fun fact:
Most snails have male and female sexual organs.
They are intersex and gender fluid.
If they could talk, I could have asked Zippy their preferred pronouns.
But they can’t talk, and we’ve always just called them “he”
Maybe Zippy is jumping out of their tank
to ask us to quit mis-gendering them.

Zippy, if that is the case, I am really sorry.
We won’t make the same mistake again.
Little snail, you are seen and you are loved.

I am also sorry if this really is about tank maintenance.
You’ve been a huge help on that front
and the least I can do
Is keep up my side of the bargain.
